Planning a destination wedding in Budapest
5 min read
Budapest is two cities facing each other across the Danube: hilly, green Buda and grand, busy Pest. It gives a wedding palaces and thermal baths, villas in the hills, and evenings your guests will remember, at prices that go further than in most capitals.
When to marry
May to September for gardens and terraces, with late spring and early autumn the gentlest. Winter has its own pull: Christmas markets, outdoor baths steaming in the snow, and ballrooms that need no help from the weather.
Buda or Pest
Villas and gardens in the Buda hills give you an evening above the river. Pest has the palaces, the grand hotels and the ballrooms. Between them, a boat on the Danube makes a drinks hour as the bridges light up.
What you need to marry legally in Hungary depends on your nationalities. Ask early, or marry at home and hold the ceremony you want in Budapest.
What your guests need to know
The airport is about half an hour from the centre. Hungary uses the forint rather than the euro, which is worth a line on the invitation's travel page, along with how to get from the hotels to the venue.
Send the save the date eight to twelve months ahead, the invitation about three months before, and close the RSVP six to eight weeks before the day.
