Planning a destination wedding in Tuscany
6 min read
Cypress lanes, stone villas, long tables under the vines: Tuscany is the wedding many people picture before they have chosen anything. It is also a region of distances, and the best Tuscan weddings are planned around them.
When to marry
May, June, September and early October. July and August are hot, and it is when Italy takes its holidays, so prices rise while some suppliers close. September and October bring the harvest, which suits a wedding built around food and wine.
Lucca, Florence or the hills
Lucca keeps its Renaissance walls whole, with a tree-lined path along the top that guests can walk or cycle. Florence and Siena bring the grand palazzi. The countryside between them is villas and agriturismi, farm estates that can house the whole party.
Couples from abroad marrying in an Italian town hall usually need a declaration from their own embassy, the nulla osta, first. Many marry at home and hold a symbolic ceremony at the villa, free of the town hall's hours and rooms.
Getting your guests there
Pisa's airport is about half an hour from Lucca, and Florence has its own. Villas in the hills are a drive from either on narrow roads, so a shuttle from the hotels is kinder than asking guests to drive back after dinner. Ask on the RSVP who needs a seat.
Send the save the date eight to twelve months ahead, the invitation about three months before, and close the RSVP six to eight weeks before the day.
