Planning a destination wedding in Malta

6 min read

Malta packs honey-coloured towns, baroque churches and the Mediterranean into an island you can cross in an hour. For a wedding that means short transfers, settings within easy reach of each other, and a summer that rarely lets you down.

When to marry

May to October is the season. June and September are the favourites: long evenings, a warm sea, and the heat of high summer either side of them. July and August are hot and busy.

Summer weekends are also festa season, when village feasts fill the night with brass bands and fireworks. You can plan around them, or invite them into the evening.

Mdina, Valletta or Gozo

Mdina, the walled old capital, is quiet lanes and palazzi, and turns gold at dusk. Valletta brings grand rooms and harbour views. Gozo, a short ferry ride away, is greener and slower. Villas and old farmhouses across the islands are the usual choice for a reception under the stars.

Civil weddings are arranged through Malta's Public Registry, and church weddings through the parish; both ask for documents months ahead. Find out early what yours will need.

Getting your guests there

Everyone lands at Malta International Airport, and nowhere on the main island is far from it. Gozo needs the ferry, so if your venue is there, tell guests about the crossing and when the last boat leaves.

If you are running a shuttle from the hotels, ask on the RSVP who needs a seat, and you will know the numbers before you book.

When to send what

Send the save the date eight to twelve months ahead, while flights are cheap and leave is easy to book. The invitation follows about three months before, and the RSVP should close six to eight weeks before the day.

Give guests a page for the practical things: where to stay, how to get around, what to wear in the heat. An invitation that reads in their own language helps when they come from more than one country.

Collect the answers while you are at it

MyEventOS turns the invitation, the RSVP and the guest list into one link, and counts the replies as they land. Free to design, free to send, and the first ten replies are included.

Questions people ask

What is the best month for a wedding in Malta?

June or September: long, warm evenings without the peak heat of July and August.

Can we marry in Mdina?

Mdina has churches, palazzi and courtyards that host weddings, and villas nearby for the reception. Book early: the old city is small and its best rooms are few.

How far ahead should we send the save the dates?

Eight to twelve months before the wedding.
